A diabetes diagnosis turns dinner into homework. Count the carbs. Balance the plate. Watch the portions. Do it again tomorrow, and the day after, for years.
For a lot of households the hardest part isn’t knowing what to eat. It’s having the time and energy to cook it every day. And when the person with diabetes is an aging parent, the worry often sits with a grown child who lives somewhere else.
Chefs who cook to your plan
The Travelling Cafe is a collective of personal chefs in Chapel Hill and the Triangle. We cook every week in our clients’ own kitchens, for households where the way someone eats is not optional.
Your doctor, dietitian or diabetes educator gives you the plan: how many carbohydrates, how to build the plate, what to limit. We cook the plan your clinician or dietitian set. We don’t set targets, adjust medication or give medical advice. You bring the plan. We cook it, every week, so it’s there when you’re hungry.
What that looks like on the plate
- Protein and vegetables doing most of the work.
- Carbohydrates cooked to your plan, not guessed.
- Sauces and dressings made from scratch, with no hidden sugar.
- Everything labeled so you know what you’re eating.
And food that still tastes like something you’d choose. Restricted doesn’t have to mean plain.
For the grown child arranging care from away
If you’re arranging meals for a parent in Chapel Hill, Fearrington or anywhere in Chatham County, you can set it up with us directly. You handle the arrangements. Our chef handles the kitchen.
How it works
- Tell us the plan. Fill out our food questionnaire: what the care team has set, other restrictions, and favorite foods.
- Meet your chef. We match you with a chef from the collective.
- Open the fridge. Your chef shops, cooks in your kitchen, labels everything and cleans up.
Groceries are included. Nothing is billed separately.
Every dietary need, same price.
What changes
Without help, meals fall back on whatever’s easy, and easy is rarely what the plan asked for.
With a chef in your kitchen each week, the right food is already made and ready to heat.
We cook in homes across Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Pittsboro, Hillsborough and Chatham County.
Start with our food questionnaire. Tell us what the plan is and what you like to eat.
